executive power has been expanded enormously by both parties in terms of precedent (what they can get away with) and cultural expectation (what avg Americans assume he’s allowed to do).
I think our best and least likely hope is that some FDR like figure rises on a massive wave of popular sentiment, and he then wields the enormous unchecked power of the executive to redistribute power back to the people. it happened before, but it took a great recession, mass migrations, violent clashes, and widespread suffering before Americans got angry enough to scare the establishment into allowing FDR to take control.
