To say it is only the result of the IP and nothing else is not exactly true IMO, there is more to it than that.

Now, gaming movies are getting bigger budgets and such, and probably more involvement from the game companies. EDIT: Also, the IPs now have way more fans than they did before. Thinking of SMB, at least
