This is really interesting. I read it earlier but didn’t have time to respond then, so I saved it to come back to it.
I’m in a similar situation, although I’m the guy doing all the chores while my wife sits on the couch. She also said the love language thing, mine is service, hers is compliments or something. (I don’t remember, it was a few years ago and sounded like bullshit to me.) Between your comments, and others in this post, it does sound like it’s sometimes used to give people an excuse to dump chores on the spouse.
I’m like, look, doing the dishes is something you just have to do to live. As is taking out the trash or recycling. We make decent money, but we’re not in the income category where we can pay people to do those things. We used to have a woman who came and cleaned the house about once every 6 weeks, and it was so nice not having to worry about that, at least. Unfortunately, she moved farther away, so we no longer have her services, and we haven’t replaced her, so the house gets dirty, and I have to clean.
As an example from a few minutes ago, we’re in our RV at Disney World, we finished dinner that I made (ravioli, so not hard), and our dog curled up on her spot on the couch, so I said, “Well, you can help me with the dishes.” Then, the dog moved, she sat down, and I did the dishes by myself.
We haven’t done the counseling. My wife was supposed to book it. Lol That was about 6 years ago.
