3·28 days agoI think there might be around 10 people in the whole world that has ever bought WinRAR. The rest of us just kept closing the nag box and used the free trial indefinitely.

1·1 month agoNiagara Launcher is great. I have been using it for a few years now
I also have a dusty environment where I work and wash my work clothes with my underwear in 60 degrees Celsius and my casual wear I wash in 40 degrees Celsius. Then I only need to do two machines. One 60 and one 40 degrees
In 2012 they had no mention of Kubuntu or KDE on the official Ubuntu homepage and downloads page. Same for the Canonical website. I checked both in April and October of 2012 on the Wayback Machine.
Weird that I don’t see any mention of KDE or Kubuntu on the 2012 Ubuntu website then.

Do you seriously expect new users to keep up with Ubuntu blogs, news sites and stuff like that? New users don’t even know what a flavor is. New users are not that involved in the eco system. Just because you have seen it that doesn’t mean it’s widely known.
This right here is one of the problems with old Linux users trying to recruit new users.
Sure, but it hasn’t been well promoted by the community or by Canonical. Otherwise I would have seen it a long time ago.
That why they shouldn’t be recommended anything that has to do with GNOME. Just give them anything that closely resembles Windows.
I installed Linux Mint on my mom’s old laptop and on my stepmother’s aunt’s laptop as well. I have had 0 support calls since then! As you say, all they want to do is browse the web.
I am convinced that Ubuntu/GNOME is the main reason that Linux onboarding has taken so long and has been so slow.
I never knew KDE Plasma and other Windows-like desktop environments existed until Valve released the Steam Deck.
If someone were to recommend me a distro with the GNOME desktop environment then I would not be a Linux for long. GNOME is weird and confusing. I am convinced that KDE Plasma, Cinnamon, LXDE and other more Windows-like desktops is better for a new Linux user. If they want an alternative desktop environment they can seek it out themselves.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Contract for self-hosting helpEnglish
1·2 months agoI will just copy and paste an old comment I made about self-hosting. I hope it helps in some way!
I got started self-hosting using a small Lenovo Thinkcentre and an HP EliteDesk. Both are available to purchase for around 100 dollars on ebay. I have installed Proxmox on both of them. Proxmox is an operating system built on Debian Linux and is used to host containers and virtual machines. It has a great WebGUI to access the server.
Using Proxmox I have set up a Pelican container for game servers hosting, I run my own personal wiki, I have PiHole, Jellyfin, Audiobookshelf and a lot more.
To access your things out of home you can use a VPN to connect to your own network or open ports in your router. I only had to open port 80 and 443 to expose my reverse proxy to the internet and then I use the reverse proxy to route the traffic internally to the correct port and project. I also purchases a domain name and now I can use jellyfin.mydomain.com or wiki.mydomain.com or whatever.mydomain.com to access each project I self-host. It’s very convenient!
Trying new projects is super easy and if you want to remove something then just delete the container. No old leftovers will stay on the host system. There are also community scripts available to make hosting even easier. It will install and configure the containers for you.

Why did you hold back? It would be a lot better to just be honest about it.
Same! When I was 27 I saw a girl that was 22. After seeing her for two days I just couldn’t take it anymore. She was way too immature for me. It felt like I was dating a kid…
To be fair I was also very immature at the age of 22. But I really don’t get men who date much younger women.
Lmao I am imagining someone punching a “Stjärngosse” from the Lucia trains we do in Sweden on December 12 because they believe it’s a KKK member.

It’s not exclusively Nazis. There was a big communist wave in Sweden during the 20s and 30s where some people chose to move to the Soviet Union with the promise of a better life and they paid a high price for it.

12·2 months agoThis might be wishful thinking but could this lead to Nintendo and other console manufacturers having to open up their ecosystem and allow third party stores?
Lmao this is a shitposting community, not something serious

The fact that they think like that is cringe in and of itself.
