I’m in Minnesota and I get super carsick just driving in Wisconsin. I’ve gone up the mountain on Orcas island in Washington and it was very beautiful but I actually thought I was gonna hurl. It feels just like those pirate ship carnival rides. I really don’t know how people ride those without getting sick.

However the small mountains (more like big hills tbh) along the north shore of Lake Superior are fine and don’t make sick at all for some reason.

For a long time I thought I hated writing until I started writing on my own with the freedom to write whatever I want. Same thing with reading as well.

It takes time to accurately analyze the situation, make a decision, and then also direct the car to where it decided to go. Current tech isn’t capable of doing this and even if future tech can, that’s not what it should be doing.

In that time the car could automatically apply intense braking, even if it destroys the car in the process, like those saw blades that detect being touched and near instantly stop. That would probably launch the driver forward, but keep in mind they also have seatbelts and airbags. The pedestrians have nothing to protect them, and as a driver it’s your responsibility to look out for them, so if anyone is to get hurt at all, it should be whoever’s in the drivers seat.

It being referred to as the trolley problem of self driving is not great because it implies that the only option is to choose who dies when in reality there are other choices that can be made instead where potentially no one even gets hurt.

I started learning French when I was 12 which I’ve continued into adulthood.

What I’ve learned after leaving highschool and learning it on my own is that the book version of the language is very much not useful if you actually want to understand native speakers.

In real life people blend sounds together and use a bunch of slang and the books really don’t teach that, so when I started learning listening skills post-highschool, it kind of felt like I starting over from square one to a degree.

I really recommend that you start with listening and speaking skills first before moving on to reading and writing. That’s the order we all learned our first language in and it still works really well for learning your second or third. The way languages are taught in schools really feels backwards to me.

I’ve been learning little bits of Japanese here and there and starting with listening first feels so much easier. I also feel like it really helps with pronunciation as well since I’m copying native speakers.

I could have had a note and a texture thingy (I would rub the screen and textured case to self soothe) although the phone is more discrete cause everyone has one.

When I was in highschool I had an app to help calm me (recommended by my therapist) because I had such severe anxiety problems. I know there are things you can do without an app but it was helpful when I was panicking so much I could hardly think. I don’t think a blanket ban is appropriate. Phones aren’t inherently bad and it really depends on how they are being used. It makes more sense to revoke phone privileges from individual students if they can’t use them properly.

I wish I read more of this thread first. In GrapheneOS it first opened my camera app and then attempted calling 911. Freaked me out so much cause I was relaxing in bed with my titties out. Also the setting is called Emergency SOS if you want to disable it.

I had something like this happen to me when I was 20. I was helping my disabled aunt by bringing some boxes up to her apartment. I kept seeing this one really old guy as I was going up and down and I got really off vibes from him. As I was leaving the building, I grabbed the same doorhandle I had grabbed many times before, except this time there was semen on the backside of it and it got all over my hand. I’m pretty sure it was the old guy cause I never saw anyone else except my aunt there. I was too naïve to know what to do in that situation so unfortunately he got away with it :(

I did but I didn’t think about it until later so I didn’t check as many stores. I tried it in a new incognito instance to avoid tracking cookies and etc, but I still got the same prices as with wifi. Although at that point they could have already identified me in some way, perhaps looking up only spam and blocking JS* makes me unique enough to identify.

* I did have to unblock the bare minimum needed to see the spam prices, so it’s possible that could have allowed them to track me better as well.

Yeah that’s why I use what I use. I’ve checked that before and as long as I have JS disabled I’m at 1/1134 which is a pretty good score. Although sometimes you have to unblock sites to get them to work, so ¯\(ツ)/¯. Although at least webgl can be blocked separately.

I decided to check Spam prices at various Targets on both my phone and desktop. I don’t typically shop at Target, though I do have an account with them but I haven’t logged in in years. I was also not logged in for the testing.

I tried at my local Target and a few around the cities and got the same prices regardless of being on mobile or desktop. Only difference was between stores with prices ranging between $4.69 and $5.59.

I did not physically go anywhere different during this test, nor did I use a VPN, so that may have been why I was getting the same prices on both devices. I also really don’t know how much Target actually knows about me other than my IP and that I block stuff.

Lmao I’m in the same boat as you. I’m a recent-ish CS grad with no job and vibe coding (or cuck coding as I like to call it) sucks the joy out of every part of CS to the point where I’ve considered going back to college to get a different degree.

Also, I’ve actually worked a manual labor job before and am fully aware of how shit they are. Very underpaid and unappreciated work imo.

My viewpoint is that genAI will always cause cognitive decline no matter what however I haven’t come across any studies yet about analytical AI also brain rotting people. If it’s trained on data with consent from it’s owners’ and they find a solution to the environmental problems, I’d be fine with it as long as it’s used for good purposes.

This post about AI detecting cancer makes me believe it might be genuinely useful, although of course it can be used for despicable, evil purposes as well.

Also, humans really like making/designing things. I don’t see the point in automating activities that many people love doing. Every time I come across an ad advertising image gen or whatever it just feels so out of touch with humanity.

While I am very anti-genAI, I’m much more okay with analytical AI as long as it’s not blindly trusted. Technically they don’t need an LLM as they could use something smaller and optimized just to find vulnerabilities. I still take issue with ethical and environmental concerns but I think there are solutions to them. We just need to slow down, take the time to do things right, and ditch the whole “move fast and break things” mindset commonly seen in tech, but I doubt that will ever happen.

I suppose the big issue for me is that I’m also an artist and I view code similarly, especially when I combine code with my graphics. I understand though that with a large project you are going to have some amount of people using AI even if you try to filter them out, so I can partially understand his stance. However I really disagree with him when he says it’s a useful tool, given how AI causes brain rot, productivity losses, and environmental destruction.

Human written code these days feels equivalent to a unique and soulful artisan made item whereas AI code is like a soulless and defected factory made imitation. I’d much, much, much, rather support artisans over factory made slop and even before AI, artisan work has been well known to be significantly higher quality than factory made stuff. For something as foundational and important as a kernel, I really think AI has no place in it.
