Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Installing **self-hostable** services on a cloud server isn't self-hosting ???English
151·1 month agoImo it’s hosting stuff for yourself or your family. In cloud or closet. If you have an advanced nas and you set up shares so everyone in the house can use it, it’s self-hosted storage. If you set up an iCloud account its not. If you rent vps, manage firewalls and reverse proxies and host your stuff there it’s selfhosting. If you use digital ocean or aws and do it for yourself its selfhosting. Saas isnt self hosting

123·1 month agoAnd what are we downloading? Is the cloud dead? Why do i need 15gbps on my phone? Is it made for consoles and their relentless 120gb patches?

Technology@lemmy.world•Ed Zitron on big tech, backlash, boom and bust: ‘AI has taught us that people are excited to replace human beings’English
2·2 months agoThis is the thing. If it does increase efficiency that only goes to the money and not the worker. It’s not unique to AI
I was just trying to point out how stupid the comment about vswitch is. Everything in your network path can watch, and some of that equipment has poor security compared to the windows vswitch
Oh, so even if i ditch windows and go linux my tplink router will see whats going on?
It provides a login shell - like
su -So you get the full environment from that user

5·3 months agoLinux knowledge is broader, especially since truenas went core. For most enthusiasts Linux gives more Google answers than bsd ones. Also the gui is harder to install for non paying users. Linux is even got gamers these days

94·3 months agoSo any language is good as I can make great software using it?? IMO js is still a mess and NPM is really full of shit code to prove it.

90% of the worst software and websites are made in js

It’s not about licensing costs at least. Cheap laptops with office and other bloat, and windows home is probably under usd10 per laptop.
But hardware requirements are a huge difference and with the ram shortage…
