I always check DownDetector for stuff like this

If that happens then maybe its users will switch to Lemmy or PieFed when they realize it’s the same network

Even if it was completely vibecoded, who cares? It’s another funnel to bring people into the Fediverse. You don’t need to use it yourself, just be glad that there’s more ways to get people in here. It’s a different design with different UX, there’s always the chance that this will hook people who didn’t enjoy Lemmy/PieFed/Mbin/etc. The more the merrier.

Hello from RetroLemmy! Always fun to see a new platform join in

This is quite a turn of events. Glad to have you joining us.

My concern isn’t mainly who can see vote records. It’s that votes can influence which posts and comments people see.
Set your default sorting to “New Comments”, which is identical to how forums do it, ignoring votes entirely.
You can also disable downvoting if you wish.
I’m not exactly sure how Lemmy calculates scores or how much they affect visibility
I’m pretty sure Lemmy doesn’t consider downvotes beyond 3. Also voting doesn’t affect visibility, just sorting.
So the score can’t be downvoted to extreme negative sorting, there’s a limit.
Users can choose how votes factor into their feeds, and disabling downvotes locally won’t stop other instances from using their own votes.
Sort of. If the post/comment comes from one of your users and you have downvotes disabled, then your server will decline the downvotes, so other instances won’t see those declined downvotes.
If you still want to make changes you could consider making pull requests for additional config options, or keeping a soft fork

Beehaw too
Sometimes it can be fun to mess around. In Crysis 1 I used cheats to make myself super strong, I would punch people and they would go flying, it was great.
But then I increased the strength higher and when I punched someone I would die for some reason. I realized if I backed away while punching I would survive. Turns out the physics of the game, with the enemy ragdolling, actually calculated that the enemy’s legs would swing up and kick me and that’s what was killing me.

Technically the default Lemmy UI does hide the dupes, although it may still be buggy. Probably worth revisiting this once v1.0 launches. I’m not sure which apps do and don’t do that though.

PieFed pretty much does that

I love this movie

You realize Reddit bans people too, right? The only difference between Reddit banning people and Lemmy.world banning people, is that Lemmy is transparent about it and gives you choices about it. On Reddit when someone gets banned they’re gone, there is no more so-called “completeness”, it’s just an illusion. But Lemmy has no such issue because you can choose who your admins are, you can join an instance that didn’t ban them.
Imagine if Reddit bans your friend, not as easy to ignore as Reddit banning a stranger, they’re gone and you have to leave Reddit entirely. On Lemmy if lemmy.world bans your friend, you can both just change which Lemmy instance you use to something more agreeable like https://lemmy.zip/
But I realize you’re probably only here to advertise your own forum. You’ve had 7 posts in the past month? And only 3 comments total? Just join the Fediverse! Lemmy, PieFed, and Mbin are open source, use one of them for your server and you’ll instantly have an active userbase of over 40k. If you use Mbin (or PieFed to a lesser extent) then it also brings access to microblog posts which means many more users linked in. And then you can allow everyone and not ban anyone.
I see a few “deleted” badges on your forums, I’m now upset that I can’t access ALL of the content!
Does this mean there will finally be an immutable LTS distro? That might be kinda cool for Grandma PCs. I wonder if it would be easy to fork to make a “it just works” competitor to Bazzite

Even if that’s true it’s still better than centralized social media. Email is pretty cool. Also you could still start a new “ring” of instances outside of the big ones, since it’s still open source and self hostable, some of the big instances might even accept you and federate. And then you just have multiple accounts, 3rd party apps manage that well.

Not many instances defed .world, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about unless there’s specific ones you know you want
PieFed has added features that reduce the need for defederation, and hopefully Lemmy will copy them
Also you don’t really need to leave .world, you can use 2 accounts, the 3rd party apps all handle this nicely

the other thing is the release cycle, if you’re constantly fighting that then maybe switch distros

the Mastodon devs never seem that interested in working with other platforms, it’s sad to see

I think this is a bigger deal than it sounds like when you consider cut and paste, or just moving files. The writing would’ve been thought to be done even if the cache is still flushing, so it deletes the source files, but the write can still fail after the source files are deleted. The device could fail, it could be unplugged, you might kick it by accident, or have a power outage.

Idk if all of these are obscure enough lol
