  • I’ve ridden in a few Waymo’s before, in SF they can be more dependable or easier to get than other ride options. I never felt like I was ever in danger in one.

Within my handful of experiences with them I’ve never had to use the help button or features to request assistance from a tele-operator but it was clear that they weren’t trying to hide the function from the passengers as the feature was explained and clearly labeled.

A friend who uses them often told me of the one time he needed to ask for assistance when their Waymo was stuck behind a doordash scooter with its hazard lights on that was either delivering or picking up and blocking a turn lane in downtown SF. The Waymo didn’t know what to do to get around it, my friend hit the button for assistance, a voice came over the speakers asking how they could help, my friend explained the situation and the tele-operator drove the car to safely navigate the situation. He said it was probably 1.5-2mins of tota inconvenience with 75% of that time was him wondering if he should hit the help button or not.

I understand a lot of AI implementation, such as Amazon Fresh or other business models have been hiding offshored human assistance within their “AI” features, which I do agree with you is deceitful but my experience with Waymo was not that. They did not hide or obfuscate that function and feature of the service but actively informed the passenger of its existence.

Granted, I haven’t ridden in one for almost a year at this point and I only did so in the SF market so things may have changed since or are different elsewhere.

Also, I can’t say that I follow the news intently about Waymo, I know they have run over a couple cats but I hadn’t heard anything about them killing people. Has that happened?

I am not saying you are right or wrong but I am really excited to see if someone posts a link to a scrabble dictionary that has that word in it.

I think it would be an exhaustive search to prove either way and I am way too exhausted to even try… but I am so hoping a person comes along that reads your comment and innately knows the exact scrabble dictionary that has that exact word in it and posts the link with proof.

I love it when an incredible amount of coincidences come together and we all learn something.

Low probability but I am here for it.

  • Well… now IS the time to act.

Lots of missed opportunity in the past to act. We can’t change that now, we can only try to do better going forward.

I feel focusing the narrative on how we got into this emergency situation to cast blame on past non-action does little to affect any future change and demotivates others from trying.

Can we focus on what we are going to do instead of pointing fingers?

I know it feels good to cast blame, to get our anger out, and gives us the feeling we are doing something. It also weighs us down, directs our focus to the past when we need to be here now focused on what options are still available to us. We can analyze how we got here and what we should have done later.

Now is all we have left.

  • During CoVid some friends and I had a virtual movie club called CoVideo Club where we would meet up in VR each week to watch a movie in a virtual movie theater together.

Over the 200 movies we watched we screened all of the Predator movies. I picked the movies and sometimes I wouldn’t tell others beforehand what we were going to be watching during our next session. None of my friends follow upcoming movies so they had no idea about Prey, what it was or when it was coming out. It had been months since we had watched the last Predator movie so when I screened Prey they had no idea it was a Predator movie. It came out the day before we screened it so there wasn’t much talk about it in the media yet.

The slow realization they had that we weren’t watching a western but a sci-fi horror movie set in the Predator universe was fun to sit back and watch play out.

I haven’t seen Prey since but if I remember correctly the first time it dawned on them that this might be a Predator movie was the first time you see the fluorescent yellow glowing blood. They went wild.

  • Yeah bud, I totally would do that.

I think it is common to have deep feelings for non-romantic partners, friends or family that would be strong enough to compel someone to avenge them if they were hurt or killed.

I’m not saying anything is wrong with you, we all experience our emotions and perceive the world around us and the people in it different, but as another poster said, you may want to talk to a therapist. Your post indicates you may have some stuff you can get help with that may expand your empathy towards others. Not an accusation but some friendly advice.

Personally, I had a lot of anger when I was younger that severely limited my empathy towards others. If I could have sorted it out in therapy a couple decades earlier than I did I know my life would have been better earlier. The connections I now have with me family and friends is deeper than I once thought possible.

It was hard to face my past and who I thought I was but once I did let go of all of that baggage I had much more space within myself for others.

  • Funny thing is, he does have a helicopter and his helicopter pilots license. Which he got in case of emergencies. After the LA fires this year I saw an interview with him where he was talking about it.

He was making fun of himself because he got his license and the helicopter to flee things like the LA fire but helicopters are expensive and he couldn’t afford more than a 2-seater so he can’t take his whole family if he ever had to really use it.

So my comment was based off a real thing he may say as to why he needed the money.

Tbh though, I could see him going with that third one.
