Most non-Mastodon “microblogging” software handles longer messages just fine. My Akkoma instance for example defaults to 5000 letters and there isn’t really a limit interface wise.

No they are not end to end encrypted, but you can restrict access to subscribers only and if you self-host it, e2ee isn’t really needed.

For end to end encrypted photo sharing there are these two open source projects that also offer a for pay cloud storage:

Not sure why you would need a seperate platform for such kind of videos though. You can use Mastodon etc. perfectly fine for this kind of stuff.

But I think that is not why the majority use TikTok. Tiktok is more like those TV channels that show an endless number of funny bloopers and cooking shows, and those need semi-professional makers and curators that want to be paid for their work.

I am not a Tiktok user, but everytime someone shares a video with me it is clearly made by someone that did it because they want to build a following and monetize their channel. I mean, why else spend a lot of effort to make such short form videos?

Most of the content on TikTok is created by people because they want to earn money with it. But most of it isn’t content which would make it possible to build up a supporter base through Patreon, OnlyFans etc. So where is the money going to come from to attract such content creators to a potential Fediverse TikTok alternative?

They can go somewhere else and talk to each other there.

Censorship means that some higher authority wants some information not to be seen by certain people. The target of censorship is therefore the readers/listeners and not primarily the person writing/speaking. Hence if the readers/listeners don’t actually want to read/hear the hateful drivel that some person shouts into the void, removing it isn’t censorship but content curation.

I think one reason has to do with digital sovereignty. Especially people in Europe are not happy with the dominance of US based social media sites and thus are more likely to invest time and effort into local alternatives. They are also more likely to be concerned about the near total lack of legal privacy protections in the US.
