Mayor says progressive peers who swept primaries speak to Americans ācoast to coastā as moderates have reservations
Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor, said on Sunday that he and a slew of democratic socialist allies who prevailed in recent primary elections are carrying a ānational messageā to struggling working Americans hungry for a new kind of politics ācoast to coastā.
Mamdani made that triumphant clarion call on ABC Newsās This Week just five days after he had seen his endorsed candidates win Democratic nominations in three races for New York congressional seats, as well as for five state legislature positions in Albany. He made no effort to disguise his delight that his clean sweep marks a dramatic shift in Democratic politics ā not just in New York City, which he has led since January, but also across the US.
He said that collectively they were carrying a āNew Deal understandingā of Democratic politics to Congress and on to the ānational stageā. It spoke, he said, to Americans feeling exhaustion at struggling to make ends meet āevery single dayā.

So youāre saying people should just keep voting for the status quo because it⦠exercises their autonomy and self-determinismā¦?
Do I have that right?
No, and I never said anything that remotely resembles that. What Iām saying is people should assess candidates based on their qualifications, history, affiliations, their stances on issues, etc. and not what someone they like tells them they should do.
Itās basically what your argument boils down to. āPeople are mindless voters because they didnāt vote for the establishment candidates who have been in office for years or even decades while continuously failing the working class.ā
How do you know people didnāt assess candidates based on their qualifications, history, affiliations, and stances on issues? Maybe people just like what democratic socialism offers, have seen the few who have been elected and like what theyāre doing.
Youāre assuming that because media headlines are attributing these primary victories to Mamdaniās endorsements, that apparently there couldnāt possibly be any other reason why people would choose to vote this way?
Thereās a whole different conversation to be had about media spin and the reluctance to admit that democratic socialism is simply a popular, winning platform. But first, please tell me how much it pays working in the office of hakeem jeffries? Is he this butthurt off-camera too?
