thumb nail already triggered me because steins gate was an anime i dropped after 1 episode, and I rarely drop shows, and also had already watched chaos; head in the “;” universe before giving steins gate a try. episode 1 is definitely not a 10/10
I love Steins; Gate, but it is definitely not for everyone. I actually dropped it the first time I tried watching after 2 episodes and then gave it another shot years later.

I made it 3 episodes in and also patched it. Just didn’t hook me. I tried to give it a fair shot, but…yeah…
Yeah it’s an insane take from the article. Steins;Gate is great, but it’s well known that the start is really boring. The story really kicks off like 1/3rd into the season.
I don’t really get this criticism. Doesn’t the murder and the time travel happen in episode 1? From there until they get their hands on the IBN is kinda slow, but it’s also building the mystery side of the story and introducing all the characters. I recently rewatched and there’s so much foreshadowing, you could actually piece together the whole story before any of the action starts. So I’ll defend the opinion that Steins;Gate is perfect and has no bad episodes or even wasted moments.
I usually give an anime the same time as a normal movie needs
So 1-1.5 hours of watching, if it’s not hitting by then, I drop it.
Many animes have fakeouts in the start, just start slowly or switch gears after a few episodes.
FMA: Brotherhood is not on here, so this list is invalid.
I’m not saying that every episode is perfection, but when you throw in a 74-episode Monster in the list, it’s already breaking its premise.

The only bad thing about Brotherhood. It speed runs the start of the story making you have to watch 2003 to get all of it.
Realistically any top anime list that doesn’t include Brotherhood is invalid
I think all 5 of these shows are worth watching, but I don’t think I would classify any of them as perfect anime with no bad episodes.
Aside from the fact that the use of the superlatives “perfect” and “every episode is a 10/10,” renders it immediately some degree of bullshit, this is a surprisingly not awful list. I wouldn’t have included Steins;Gate, which is drug down by a tediously unsympathetic protagonist and too many convenient plot contrivances, but aside from that, I’m sort of impressed by the inclusions, and particularly the generally underrated Paranoia Agent, only somewhat diminished by the use of the clunky localized name “Lil’ Slugger” instead of the vastly superior and more correct name, “Shounen Bat.”
man Paranoia Agent is so damn good I wish more people watched it. I’d also say Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex: 2nd Gig.
Paranoia agent is my fav. SAC is easily in my top 5.

Haibane Renmei is a series that left me deeply unsatisfied. There is so much more I want to know about that world, but you can only fit so much into 13 episodes
Haibane Renmei sets up a lot of questions, but I don’t think it would have any satisfying answers. The world is a backdrop for the character arcs. Why did Kuu fly? It isn’t explained, not to us or to Rakka, and the question eats at Rakka, which is the whole point. Death does not give reasons, it just is.
When I first watched the show a few years ago, I felt the same. Ultimately I think whether you like the show or not depends on how comfortable you are with the mysteries remaining unanswered. I think being a fan of Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian primed me to accept the unanswered questions, as they’re irrelevant to the story of the characters overcoming guilt and finding salvation.
Hellsing Ultimate. Absolutely zero fat on that OVA. Only took them 13 years to finish…
Call me crazy, but I liked the original better. Ultimate acted like it was trying to speedrun to the ending, which threw in some Nazi antag that I wasn’t really interested in.
Monster was my first ever anime, by a friends’ recommendation. I transcoded them to watch on my DS with an R4 back in the day, absolutely loved it even though it’s definitely not for everyone.
Years later I totally forgot the name and couldn’t find it anymore, until a completely unrelated friend recommended it as well and immediately realised and never forgot about it again!
