For me it’s time signatures in music. I grew up playing instruments, played in several orchestras, etc. But no matter how many times someone tries to explain time signatures to me, it makes no sense. I don’t understand why people place such importance on it. To me, notes have a pitch and a duration, maybe some dynamics. That’s it. I don’t understand why people try to needlessly complicate it. It doesn’t give you anything.

My wife will hear a song and go “Oh neat, it’s in 5/8.” And I’m like “How tf do you know that, and why does it matter?”

Story comprehension. For example, I was trying to play Chrono Trigger, and at some point I just can’t follow the story any more. Then I lose interest in the game.

Happens in books and movies as well.

I kind of have the same but I taught myself to enjoy the moment to moment gameplay and story progression.

I played through Chrono Trigger and all I remember is that it had an awesome soundtrack, there was a frog dude, cool mechanic visiting the same place in different time period and at one point there was a bridge which probably was important. I spent tens of hours and that’s the story synopsis I can muster. I still can tell you that I enjoyed playing the game. Storytelling is only one part of entertainment.

Ya I often do that too, but I wanted to know why people regard this game so highly. Also understanding the story becomes more essential to know which time period to travel to. So I found it hard to figure out where to go.

I get that people remember stories and I don’t. I have them in my short them “work memory” and others have them bleed to long term memory. That’s great! When my ‘cache clears’ in a few months or years I don’t feel sad I just feel… enriched?

I no longer consider myself to be adept to judge stories. It’s just like music. Others might feel strongly about some style but their likes are not yours and might be completely wrong.

This is not to patronize but to recognize your weakness and enjoy entertainment around it. I’m not a native speaker so I have hard time to convey my point but this is a skill to learn not a hardship to bang your head against. All the best :)

I can’t count how many times I’ve read or heard about something having an amazing story, only to think to myself “This is dogshit.” That’s when you realize just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s written well.

The most recent example of this was this horror short story about a town where people couldn’t die (content warning, duh), but can very much still be injured and all the shenanigans that entices. While the comments were mostly praising it, I though to myself “Did a 12 year old write this?”
