    From The Matrix

Agent Smith: I’d like to share a revelation during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we are the cure.

i agreed with this when i watched the movie but something about it always bothered me. i get it now. it’s because a virus does what it does because of its nature. humans choose to live like we do. not at the beginning but we know enough now to at least try to make an effort to stop, and most people choose not to. i guess you could make the same argument for invasive species other than us. but we do seem to fit the definition more than that of a virus.

It’s in our nature to destroy ourselves. It’s in our nature to kill ourselves. It’s in our nature to kill each other. It’s in our nature to kill, kill, kill.

Humans are cancer and has given earth stage four cancer. No worries for the planet tho because she’ll just get a major dose of radiation treatment to remove the disease and become healthy again. She’s been through worse.

I hate this kind of doomerism so much.

I know it’s just a shower thought, which are meant to be kinda flawed and reductive, but it’s just such a reckless dismissal of everything we’ve accomplished as a species.

I think Hank Green says it best: https://youtu.be/FcbtkVTAyqM

Edit: On Lemmy, if you just link to a video people will say “Can’t you provide a tl;dw?” but it you do provide a tl;dw, they’ll respond with stuff that’s covered in the video.

      Why is it doomerism??

It’s just a definition (one that we created), and if you think we don’t for the criteria, you’re letting your feelings make you look ignorant

Just because we’ve done some pretty cool things, it doesn’t dismiss the really bad things we’ve done. That’s just as a reductive argument as we’ve done some bad things so that dismisses the good things…

By the same definition that we label other animals, humans are an invasive species.

In like what parts of the world tho?

Also technically humans invented the idea of an invasive species. Otherwise it’d just be nature taking its course.

If invasive species are species that are introduced to an environment and cause severe disruption to habitats and existing species then it sounds like almost every species was invasive at some point

are they? i have vote visibility disabled.

it’s funny though. wasn’t trying to call anyone out. it just occurred to me that we are and that the only reason we aren’t classified as one is because we are the ones making the decisions. it’s not a pleasant thought. how destructive we are.

i’m not advocating for human extinction dude. it’s just an observation about our behavior.
