    Nah

AI slop is excarbating climate change. Like. We’re fucked even without AI, but it’s like driving a car off a cliff and setting it on fire before you go over…

It’s not helping and even if a few people thinks it looks cool, that fire is going to suck because and make what little time we have before the cliff even less pleasant.

But not all AI output is slop, that’s the point.

It does use a huge amount of energy, often for little reward, but so does social media. Facebook uses a staggering amount of energy. For what? Opt-in propaganda and ads. TikTok uses a truly enormous amount. Again, for what? 30 second videos of dances and the stupidest people of earth sharing their “life-hacks”.

The slop issue isn’t AI, it’s humans.

What is your argument here? That because Ticktock and the like use up huge amounts of energy for their slop that is fine for AI to do the same? Because I could just reply with:

“Social media isn’t the issue, it’s humans.”

And what AI output isn’t slop?

I’m saying trying to dismiss all AI usage with the energy usage argument is disingenuous if you don’t have a similar issue with social media.

The truth is that you’ve read someone else saying it and latched onto to it.

As for “what AI output isn’t slop?”, come on - literally anything can be bad, generated by AI or not. I personally use AI for spotting bugs in code - it’s good. I also use AI to generate complex XSLT and regexes - it’s very good at that.

Is it 100% correct all of the time? Of course not, but it gets it right on the first try far more often than a person would, in a fraction of the time.

I built a tool that generates MCQs from a given text for revision - it’s extremely useful.

I use it for translations when I want to read something a different language. Is it perfect, again no, but it’s better than I am, and it allows me to understand the text.

Also, AI is in everything already - your camera app, the Google suite, even your car if you have TSR.

AI itself isn’t the problem - it’s the people who create slop that are.

But not all AI output is slop, that’s the point. lie

If you teach a turtle to use a skateboard it’s going to think it’s amazing and no one could ever need to go faster than that.

        Because turtles are fucking slow.

Give a deer a skateboard, and it’s not going to give a shit.

Some people are turtles, so AI seems useful and impressive.

Maybe someday AI will improve and a person of average intelligence will find AI impressive. But at this rate the human race won’t last that long.

That’s the main problem when AI comes up in discussion, there is a very wide gap between someone who thinks AI is useful, and someone who actually understands what it is, what it does, and what the true cost is.

So if you try to explain it with facts and logic, it has no chance of working.

        It doesn’t…

You’re just telling everyone that in addition to the social media account, you also don’t know what you’re talking about.

But that was a safe assumption already.

Large-scale AI deployments pose several environmental concerns. Most AI servers are stored in data centres, which produce electronic waste and can contain toxic chemicals, such as mercury and lead. Data centres consume vast amounts of electricity, creating greenhouse gas emissions. They also require large amounts of water for construction and to cool the electrical components. Global AI demand is expected to consume 4.2-6.6 billion cubic meters of water by 2027, surpassing Denmark’s total annual water withdrawal of 4-6 billion cubic meters

        https://unric.org/en/artificial-intelligence-how-much-energy-does-ai-use/

We don’t have enough water and clean energy for humans, we can’t afford to waste even more because some people are too lazy and ignorant

The point of OPs post is that people who are so vocally against AI will read the word AI in a post and go off on rants without reading the rest of the post, much like a conservative seeing the word “pronouns.”

You read the word AI and went off on a rant, ignoring the rest of the post. The subject of this post was never the pros and cons of AI use. You steered it that way, because OP is right.

No. I explained why people would say AI is terrible when the topic of AI came up…

I’m sorry you can’t understand this, but me trying to explain anything to you seems kind of pointless by now.

    Gross.

LGBT people: just living, don’t impact you by existing

AI: now the internet is chock full of complete and utter hallucinated bullshit, and anyone who wants to flood the zone with lies useful to their pet cause has access to a firehouse. Facebook is filled with pictures of aliens and fake versions of archeological artifacts (hell, there are slop pages that post fake Holocaust survivors)

YouTube is full of garbage “music” and top ten lists that spread horseshit about animals and historical events.

Amazon has crafting and foraging manuals that are entirely made up. Good luck foraging for mushrooms, if you’re lucky maybe it won’t just be the AI hallucinating!

Jobs are being lost because C-suite types will happily sacrifice quality and accuracy to save on salaries. Businesses that would have to pay an actual artist to work on their advertisements instead shrug and post soulless garbage.

Gen AI should not exist. The collective delusion around fancy markov chains and plagiarized pictures/videos is fucked.

I’m not saying AI is a bad as Nazis, although a lot of it’s proponents are, but maybe you can see how people might have a visceral reaction to it and not want to “discuss it’s merits”.

Little Nazi techbros wasting massive resources on a toy that’s more damaging than good doesn’t deserve discourse.

Yes I will fucking freak out. The planet is on fucking fire, people can’t afford basic groceries, species are dying - and some idiots insist in spending water, using energy and stealing people’s works using some fascist tech-bro’s doombot because AI is supposedly fun or convenient. I hate AI with a passion for all the reasons reasonable people keep explaining again, and again, and again: the environment, the copyright, the dark fascist agenda behind it. Soon enough I’ll lose patience with stupid AI bros who are going ‘but it’s just harmless fun’ and just screech into their ears at full volume in a last desperate attempt to wake up their shrinking GPTchat-fucked brains.
