One time I was flying to Atlanta from Richmond and there was some kind of weather issue. But they did not cancel the flight just delayed it… by like eight hours or something. Everyone was cancelling, but the desk told me that I was welcome to wait since the flight was not cancelled. I couldn’t afford a hotel so I did that. I was the only person in the airport. I bought a book and watched everything shut down around me. I sat alone and watched the Zamboni thing come by to clean the floors. Eventually the guy who waves the glowing orange wands on the runway came in and told me that the flight was coming in, but that they might wind up cancelling it. Awhile later a random Frontier (I think it was Frontier at least) came to the desk and started booting up her computers. Apparently there was another guy who waited because he just showed up out of nowhere.

The attendant told me that the crew was based out of Atlanta and wanted to get back home, so the plane would be heading back and that we were the only two passengers. We were both upgraded to First Class. I could tell that the attendant was tired and hated that she had to stay at work until this flight arrived. So I stood at the gate and asked, stone-faced: “Are we boarding by zone?” She laughed HARD.

Wound up passing out before I even finished my complimentary cocktail and missed out on the First Class experience. Woke up as we began landing procedures to the other guy surround by attractive flight attendants having a great time.

I’ve long wondered why airports don’t have movie theaters, arcades, and private sleeping spaces for exactly those times when travelers have hours long layovers.

Back in the Before Times, there was a lot more freedom in airports, you could wander in and out of the terminals and there was more to do. I remember distinctly the Little Rock airport had a lot of arcade games and Nintendo 64 kiosks through the whole Southwest terminal. This was before 9/11, when our whole country decided all at once that we need to self-immolate ourselves and stop enjoying anything ever again.

Most high end lounges have somewhere you can nap, at least. I have this one airport where I usually have a few hours before my final 50min flight to get home, and I always spend those hours in a lounge so I can get a nice shower and somewhere quiet.

Might be that the net revenue per hour of a restaurant will always win, unless you charge $50 per ticker for a movie.

I’ve flown Frontier several times without issue. The one that always gets me is Volaris in Mexico. Both seem to use the same style of web application / mobile app (horrible) but at least they use Airbus planes?

Around 2010-2015 I flew with American Airlines and Delta a lot and never had a bad experience. I’m surprised Delta was horrible.
