Yes, but also XKCD 150
This. In my case, it was realizing that I can have potato chips every day of the week.
I don’t get the appeal of chicken wings. The amount of work involved vs the meat payout is way lopsided.
Chicken wings are only food on medium difficulty. Whole crabs take more energy to open than you gain from meat.
Trick is spear the meat and pull it out, instead of trying to open the leg.
For king crab, yes. For snow crab, you can open the leg with the right technique. Snap it in the middle and you can remove one half of the shell then pull the meat out of the other half.
Yeah but chicken wings are medium effort for like 6/10 food while crab is high for 10/10 food
I don’t intentionally eat bugs so that’s a non issue for me.
No bugs? I enjoy most of the sea bugs (with butter). Also eaten crickets, meal worms, and ant eggs/larvae.
I’m cool with someone else enjoying it, it’s just not for me. 🤷
Sometimes it’s not all about how easy it is to eat something. Sometimes if something tastes good enough, I’m willing to put in the smallest amount of effort.
Every time I’ve had it I taste whatever was put on it, zero chicken taste. At that point you may as well just make little dumplings with batter and the seasonings and keep it boneless.
That’s on the wings you choose.
If you have a Publix within range, for example, their “naked wings” are quite tasty. While they do season them lightly with salt and some sort of spice, they’re basically just fried wings, but very tasty.
I miss my pub subs :(
That’s why I go boneless “wings” instead. I make sure it’s actual dark meat pieces and not just nuggets though.
Sometimes I prefer food that takes work to eat because I know I’m not actually all that hungry, just bored.
I never understood the difficulty argument. It’s not like these people would be open to just slamming a glass of Soylent because it’s easy.
Funny you mention that. I absolutely went through a DIY Soylent phase, but I was playing around with the recipe(s) via nutrition tracker apps, aiming to hit targets via “real” foods, not supplements, and aiming for “different” recipes. It’s actually not as difficult as you might expect, and I don’t even mind eating the same meal for a good chunk of my meals, but it just… didn’t… work… Maybe it’s the lack of chewing?
What do you mean by “didn’t work?”
I was still “hungry”. I was definitely getting calories, macros, etc., but I think it being in liquid form, no chewing, meant that some of the biological processes weren’t getting the expected feedback.
Yeah, there was something strange about not masticating, but I did find it filling and unexpectedly satisfying.
It’s not an argument my dude, just a preference. I’m lazy and don’t like wings much to begin with so the fact that they’re extra effort just puts them down another notch. They’re annoying.
Well the appeal basically boils down to they’re fucking delicious; particularly when compared to other chicken parts seasoned in the same way.
Your focus on the meat of it all is probably your downfall. Fat brings the flavor and chicken skin is packed with it. Wings, far and away have the best skin to meat ratio of all the chicken parts.
- wings: too much work
- drumsticks: too easy
- thighs: perfection
Whole chickens. Taste the rainbow.
- protein
- crispy crunchy
- flavourful (whether from being nicely cooked or from all the optional extra stuff)
- takes some time to eat, slowing me down (so I don’t overeat as easily, and can sit down and actually watch the game recap without finishing 20% of the way through)
also, chicken wings come in sizes from “this looks like it was a baby” to “there is no way this chicken was healthy before slaughter”
I like a good midsize crispy wing with spices and just a dab of sauce.
eating slop bowls gets boring
The same with drum sticks!
Cooking is supposed to be the difficult part and once I sit down to eat I don’t want to work for the food any more! Just let me eat it.
Finally, a kindred soul. Everyone I knew in high school and college was obsessed with getting wings all the time. I don’t get it
After some practice, you only need two bites and maybe a little nibble for each one. Then they’re great.
Part of being an adult is knowing that OP needs to mind their own business.
Part of being an adult is eating chicken wings everyday for a week until you get bored because you can. lol
I remember saying to my roommate at the time, 30+ years ago, something like, “I can just buy and eat cake whenever I want. What the hell?”
This was just before my realization that pie is superior to cake in every way.
Hear hear 🤝
pie is superior to cake in every way.
For me, that depends. I have had both shitty cakes and shitty pies. The cake needs to avoid butter cream or frosting in favour of whipped cream, and the pie needs to NOT be mostly sugar in the filling/topping.
I’ve had a sweet tooth since childhood, and the only foods which have ever turned that sweet tooth against me (in terms of having an expected sugar presence) have been both pies and cakes.
I stand by my statement without offering evidence, or citations.
Absolutely fair where personal preferences are concerned!
The last time someone suggested people eat it, they cut off her head. And rightfully so.
Why would you eat cake without butter creme frosting? That’s the entire point of cake. Hand me a piece of cake with WHIPPED CREAM, and I’m gonna, gonna, gonna…well, I’m gonna eat it, but I’d rather have buttercream frosting.
Why would you eat cake without butter creme frosting?
I know you’re just ribbing me, but if I may be neurodivergently serious - despite having an unrelenting sweet tooth, it comes down to two things:
- Too heavy
- Too sweet
Either one by itself is okay, the two together is just a major hell naw.
The heaviness is also why I am not a fan of most cheesecakes. A super-light one, fine. But I frequently cannot finish most slices of cheesecake unless they’re particularly narrow slices, far thinner than usual.
Cheesecake, now? I’m sure you’re a perfectly nice person, but we can’t be friends, you and me.
Compared to lots of other foods, chicken wings aren’t especially unhealthy, I think? They aren’t normally deep fried, chicken is a healthier meat than beef or pork, not sure there are good health reasons not to eat them every day? Of course it gets boring after a while.
Im sorry to say, chicken wings could quite possibly be the worst thing for you. Its the absolute fattest part of the chicken. Its really all fat. Then they are covered in sugary sauce or fatty sauce. They aren’t chicken breast, they’re the dark meat covered in skin. The dipped in delicious butter/oil rich buffalo sauce. The best things ever…
That’s often the recipe. However, there is a way to make it healthier. Remove the skin, skip all the sauces, boil the wings in plain water, chop the meat into pieces, and sprinkle them on a salad. Use fat-free yoghurt as a salad dressing to make it taste better. The good thing is, you can fill your stomach with this without gaining weight.
Yup. Most unhealthy things can be made healthy by making them horrible.
Fat and sugar are tasty. That gives us an evolutionary advantage to prioritise foods that are good for survival in a hunter-gatherer society. Nowadays, though, these taste receptors are not really helping me stay healthy.
I’m only slightly ashamed to admit I had buffalo wings for breakfast with oil rich buffalo sauce this morning.
OK, I wasn’t thinking of the sauce, that part could be unhealthy.
Have you ever made buffalo sauce? It’s literally 50% butter and 25% honey (and its delicious)
No, I may or may not have had it at a restaurant or something, but if so, don’t remember it. It’s not a usual food where I live.
Wings are white meat though.
“Healthy” in regards to foods is problematic at best. It all depends on the rest of your diet, your needs, and especially your dosage (portions and portion size).
Could a small amount of chicken wings be a great supplement? Sure, it has all sorts of useful micro and macro nutrients, if that’s what you need. Could you have a bunch without any impact to your health? Possibly, if you’re doing keto. Would your health improve if you cut them out? Also a maybe, if it doesn’t work with the rest of your lifestyle and genetics.
Example: Chicken is high in omega-6. This is bad for some people, but only some. And I bet you hadn’t considered it as a factor in whether it’s healthy.
Embrace your inner child.
Why the fuck not? I’m not switching to breast. Breast meat sucks.
Very limited by choice here if I want frozen chicken. 99% is ultra processed crap. Went through an entire aisle the other day in Iceland and not one raw or even plain cooked option for chicken. Everything was battered or covered in what ever sauce and more expensive because of it.
Aldi had chicken breast and that was the only option.
It’s actually pretty good if you give it some maillard and seasoning. Don’t just boil it and expect Popeyes.
It still ain’t better than the wings and thighs when they’re made the same way.
Not better, but it doesn’t suck.
I believe the idea is fried chicken wings. Fried food is not a good daily meal.
Wait; what?
I mean, maybe they’re a liiiittle fatty, but I’m not going to be eating boneless skinless chicken breast instead.
I made a Thai green curry with enough ghost peppers that I’m taking firey shits today and that boneless skinless chicken breast was damn tasty.
In This House We Believe
Chicken thighs are always better than chicken breast.…but at least you have some fat from the coconut milk to help lubricate things…
Chicken thighs are amazing too!
Now imagine how much better it would have been with wings.
I’ve got wings marinating in kaffir leaves, lemongrass and ghost peppers so I don’t have to imagine.
I woke up this morning with a spring in my step because it’s chicken wing day.
I just made some curry yesterday with left over rotisserie chicken!
Why not?
It’s a protein, so it really just depends on what your eating with them. As long as you’re getting balanced nutrition, there’s no reason Chicken Wings can’t be the protein choice every day.
They are fried and fatty. Some protein, but mostly fats. Also, vegetables are made of protein.
You…you don’t have to fry them
https://tastesbetterfromscratch.com/crispy-baked-chicken-wings/#wprm-recipe-container-10130
Legit baked wing recipe. Baked but they come out as crispy as fried. You use baking powder and dry seasonings and pat the wings dry before baking. So damn good.
Deep fried chicken wings with skins on are still more protein than fat, and that about as fatty as they can get. What are you on?
They are an essential component of the Team Sports industry
I’m doing keto. I’m allowed.
I am not doing keto but also allowed
And it really really works
Part of being an adult is making wackadoodle decisions and eating things you later regret.
That’s exactly what a chicken would say
I don’t really like chicken wings. Too much messy work for too little reward.
Hold onto the side of the flat with the knuckle cartilage and twist the small bone and pull it out, now you can mouth the whole flat and pull the meat from a single bone or if you twist and pull the bigger bone out you can eat the thing whole except the cartilage.
It is still a lot of work vs reward but the crispness of the skin and sauce holding ability make them worthwhile.
I can absolutely destroy a plate of wings in like just a couple minutes using this technique and my reckless abandon for devouring cartilage. This is just basically a skill issue
We went to a wing Wednesday and I got down about 45 wings myself pretty easy. I’m not a fan of the cartilage so I skip that.
That’s why I only eat them twice a week.
I know it’s not the healthiest of the foods but being Finnish chicken it’s at least not seasoned with literal poison and considering that I airfry them it’s at least better than deepfryed. Let me have my wings and comforting lies. Cooking and eating is such a struggle for me.
I could, though, it’s an option.
