I feel like AI enthusiasts would become a bit disillusioned with AI if they could see what was being added to their prompts.
What’s being added?
It’s called a system prompt. It’s a wrapper around the prompt you, the user, writes, which is called the user prompt.
What exactly is being added to the system prompt is a huge part of the “secret sauce” of the AI providers, because it greatly affects the quality and tone of the output. It may also be part of the safety layer of guardrails to stop users from asking about topics the AI providers have deemed taboo (such as biology, in recent news).

Not really, you can add a prompt to commercial LLM products to alter the persona a bit but the actual system prompt the harness is using is opaque to you. Your Claudes, Kimis, Mistrals and what have you are a polished product on top of the model, they’re not the model itself. A lot of the actual day-to-day software engineering of these things is writing a harness that’s robust enough to deal with a cantankerous non-deterministic pile of linear algebra that doesn’t know the difference between ‘looks good’ and ‘is good’.

Neural networks have existed for decades, but it’s only in the last few years have companies started replacing people with the technology en masse.
That’s because the ability to barf out language that sounds reasonably like a person might have written it is relatively new. It makes it easier to fool the non-technical and the idiots that it’s actually AI in the sci-fi sense. Makes for really good marketing to fools with your money.
I don’t think so. I think that decades of science fiction writers who needed villains for their stories has warped generations about how we should interact with technology. Kind of like how old school movies would only cast villains as foreigners or dress them in black. This is a manipulation that is subtle but still a manipulation.

That goes straight to my pile. While the Dune series isn’t exactly my cup of tea (and gets progressively worse imo), I absolutely love The Santaroga Barrier.
The story of the Emperor God does grind but D.Idaho is the best thing. The peak human continually cloned after each of it’s deaths and never knowing what the previous clones did was a fun part of the story. The idea of Paul’s sister becoming corrupted and possessed by the Baron was a good twist too

Funny thing about the fourth book - decades ago I was in a library and saw Dune on the shelf and immediately picked it up because I knew Dune 2 was one of the best games ever and I like sci-fi. It took me a while to realise I picked the God Emperor of Dune rather than the first one. I didn’t know there were multiple. I liked it. Duncan Idaho was the GOAT in there for sure.
I read the fifth book afterwards, maybe to continue where I left off, but it could also be that the library didn’t have any others. Or they were always borrowed.
I only got around to reading the whole thing from the start as the new movie went into theatres, though by that time I had a pretty good picture of the story from all the adaptations (including the first Dune game, which is an adventure game more or less following the first book’s story).
Anyway, the first one is great. The second and third, I felt like I was only enjoying them because I wanted to see what happens with the characters and to stay in the world a bit longer, but they’re weaker than the first. Re-reading the fourth one, I had a blast. I can see why it is less popular in general, but since it was the first one I read, I had a connection to it and really enjoyed it.
Then I got to the fifth one and… I just couldn’t finish it. I didn’t care about any of the characters or what they were doing and it was just a drag. I only read the synopsis of the sisxth one on wikipedia and, wow, that sounds like a terrible fan-fiction, with all the popular characters from the first book coming back to life thousands of years in the future. I could be wrong, but it certainly seems like I dodged a bullet when I stopped reading where I did.
After God Emperor of Dune I just couldn’t follow it anymore and it got very boring. I don’t think I even finished Heretics of Dune. I tried to finish it with an audiobook but even then I don’t think I did finish it. I did induldge in the stories that Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson wrote. I liked how they were little self contained stories in that universe and didn’t rely on anything more then a basic understanding of the first Dune story

The major flaw with your argument is that LLMs are run by major corporations (aka the ruling class), the same class that run the majority of media outlets, and are therefore generally looked upon favourably. Immigrants are not.

They learn, approximately, jack shit when using AI incorrectly (I.e. they way the majority of the public use it). AI is a useful tool when used well (e.g. to generate solutions with errors to test knowledge); so far I see little evidence among students it is being well used.
Most everyone is willing to work with machines, that’s genuinely not optional in the modern world, we’re just not willing to work for machines.
I don’t see humans being any better. I would rather use the tools available to give us power rather than deny that and give them power over us.

Generate content. Nobody can know everything but if someone posts about whatever their latest conspiracy is, do you spend an hour trying to debunk it? Maybe move on and ignore? This is the bullshit asymmetry principal. They flood spaces with bullshit so that the left says fuck this and leaves. The issue with this is if anyone reads a repeated message over and over they will come to believe it. This is how advertising works. As long as you’re not diametrically opposed, it’ll become something you see as fact. So one way AI can be used is to make the bullshit less asymmetrical.
Just today I had to look up about CAF banning “god” in the military. I can quickly search how factual this is and find direct sources for what AI says. Under 5 minutes I can have a pretty good argument based on facts with sources. AI closes the bullshit asymmetry problem and returns digital platforms to the left instead of conceding these public spaces to the right
Before AI went public people quite willingly gave up thinking as soon as we got texting capability. To save keystrokes we took to abbreviating everything and creating simple slang terms for complex conditions, which trained us to think in those simplistic terms all the time. Now we gloss over most details because we don’t think we need them. We know this guy is racist or that woman’s a Karen because it’s obvious, duh. Why bother considering multiple sides of a situation when somebody else already did the thinking for us and slapped on an easy to consume label? We can make value judgements so much faster now, allowing us to scroll ahead to the next item in our feed, or the next conversation subject, or the next voting decision. Barely scratching the surface is fine if you pretend that’s all there is, and demonize anybody who thinks a situation deserves more thought.

AI is definitely encouraging general cognitive decline, same as any tool degrades a muscle or skill it replaces. The industrial revolution degraded human physical fitness. Social media has degraded human interaction, attention span and thinking skills, and oversimplifies every issue to an acronym or slang label because the prime directive is brevity. But the end state is only futility when people aren’t willing to address their own role in the whole process - which they aren’t.

Interestingly, serving those texts was literally free for the carriers. They used the empty space at the end of blocks of data the phones were using to stay in contact with the network. That’s why it had that very specific character limit.
