Summary

Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal bishop at the Washington National Cathedral, directly confronted Donald Trump during his inaugural prayer service, urging him to show compassion for marginalized groups.

She criticized his policies on LGBTQ rights, mass deportations, and immigration, calling for mercy toward undocumented immigrants and children fearing family separation.

Trump dismissed the sermon as “not too exciting,” while his supporters condemned Budde’s remarks as inappropriate.

Budde’s bold address marked the first public challenge to Trump’s agenda during his second term.

Trump supporters are pissed and saying this bishop was giving Trump a “cnn or the view “ type lecture. I wonder what they think of that Jesus dude who said similar stuff. I wonder if they’ve heard of him. They’d probably roast him as a liberal beta

He didn’t say the service was “not so exciting”. He said “I didn’t think it was a good service, no” and “they could do much better” (source). I know it’s not a huge deal, but I’m fucking tired of the media misreporting and softening his statements.

And of course he went further on his social media:

The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart. She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people. Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology! t

      What a spiteful child

He may have finally found somebody he can’t bully. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but huzzah for the, ugh, priest.

I keep like I need to go boil my tongue.

The Episcopal church isn’t as bad as most. Next to the United Church of Christ they are the most progressive and that’s sadly why they are dying.

I’m pretty sure I went to a UCC church as a kid and had a great time doing arts and crafts at “Sunday school” lol. I don’t remember learning a lick about religion, but I do remember the bomb-ass potlucks, and how our pastor was one of the coolest, kindest people I’ve ever met.

They are exactly appropriate. When the Reverend is calling you out, you’re supposed to fucking listen. These dudes are all about hierarchies and traditions until it doesnt suit them.

I think he said “not too exciting” because he didn’t hear a word she said. Maybe he quickly perked up if “Mr. President” made it through his ears, but I doubt she kept his attention for long because the title wasn’t included in praise.

She’s very brave, and I honestly wish I could shake her hand. I don’t know about Episcopalians, but for many faiths being a Bishop is just as much a political position as anything else.

Episcopalians are functionally like a more equality oriented catholic. Gay marriage is chill, women can be priests, divorce is chill. That type of stuff

This comment together with the other reply to me are interesting taken together. Why have administrations been so “conservative” if they have such a progressive faith in common?

To tack onto the other comment about divisions. The episcopal church in the middle of a schism, with a lot of churches leaving and forming what are called Continuing Anglican churches, the largest of which (to my knowledge) is the Anglican Church in North America, or the ACNA. Personally, I think they’re kinda dicks, as a denomination. Left mainly over gay priests and women’s ordination. The episcopal church is fairly progressive of late, though not always historically. They’re a member church of the Anglican Communion, churches derived from the church of England.

I’ve never been prouder to be an Episcopal than I was when I heard her speech. But I’m not foolish enough to think it’ll make any difference. I doubt the religiosity, genuine faith, of really any of modern presidents, but trump especially clearly has no real beliefs.

Well, it’s basically an offshoot of the church of England, which may explain why it’s so overrepresented. Got brought along to the colonies.

Also I wouldn’t call it a progressive faith per se, historically speaking. Iirc there were a lot of internal divisions and different groups splintered off and formed their own things when the pro LGBT stuff was initially decided. So it’s hard to say what an Episcopalian from say 100 years ago might have in common with the modern church

the Episcopal church is the largest single denomination between all the presidents, so it’s pretty influential in that sense.

Episcopalians are wildly progressive compared to other American Protestants. It’s very much come as you are.

It used to be widespread, but for some reason the reactionary, hate-filled stuff has been gaining in popularity at the expense of more open-minded Christianity for decades now, and especially in the USA. Where I live the majority of churches are covered with rainbow flags and “everyone welcome here” signs. But more and more people are going to megachurches where they play shit music and preach hatred.

Different denominations have different views. The Episcopal Church if the USA is very progressive in its current form. Two presiding bishops ago there was a woman in charge.

It’s easier to tear apart if you just go by the things they all agree with, the Bible, the shit they do and believe that isn’t in the Bible or historical record at all. Christians that believe in equality and helping people, that think the Bible is just a story and a way to live life, I don’t try to argue with them because they’re not hurting anyone based on their beliefs. But if they hold harmful religious beliefs, I’ll give them grief about it and tear holes in everything they believe.
